Tapping - Frequently Asked Questions and Measures

22/07/2021

In the process of tapping, the problems often encountered and the measures recommended are as follows:

Thread size is out of tolerance

Check the diameter of the thread bottom hole is accurate;

Check the amount of material deformation after tapping, and replace the bottom hole drills of different diameters;

Check the degree of tap wear and replace the tap in time;

Try to use the recommended cutting speed for the tap sample;

Check the tap accuracy level and replace the tap with the appropriate tolerance;

Is the axial feed and rotation of the spindle synchronized? It is recommended to replace the flexible tapping shank with a flexible tapping solution.

Tap cutting edge micro-crack

Using taps with better material toughness;

Select the appropriate cutting fluid and check the emulsifier or mineral oil content;

Check whether the length of the chamfered front end of the tap and the depth of the threaded bottom hole interfere with each other;

Check the tap removal of the tap and replace the taps of the different types of flutes.

Tap break

Excessive torque can cause the tap to break. You can choose a tap with a low torque design or a tapping shank with torque overload protection.

The choice of tapping cutting fluid is very important, the appropriate proportion of emulsion or mineral oil can effectively reduce the tapping torque;

Insufficient depth of the threaded bottom hole, causing the front end of the tap to interfere with the bottom of the threaded hole is a common factor causing the tap to break;

If the diameter of the bottom hole of the thread is too small, the tapping torque will increase, and the replacement of the larger diameter threaded hole drill bit can effectively solve this problem.

Fast wear of the tap

Reduce the cutting speed to reduce the cutting temperature;

Use a suitable cutting fluid to ensure accurate cooling supply position and sufficient flow;

Appropriately increase the diameter of the threaded bottom hole.

Built-up edge

If the cutting speed is too low, refer to the manufacturer's sample recommendation and increase the cutting speed appropriately;

Use a suitable cutting fluid to ensure accurate cooling supply position and sufficient flow;

Replace the smoother taps.
